Skateboard Laws
Skateboarding Laws

You can not put your feet on the skateboard in the downtown area, Corydon or in Osbourne Village. The city has put up 200 signs to mark off where you can't skateboard.

While you still can't skateboard on the street, the most important part of the law still exists - the skateboard can only be used for 'transportation' - you can't do tricks anywhere!

The fine is still a minimum of $150 to a maximum of $1000.

The current bylaw (written in 1977) is as follows:

COASTERS, SKATEBOARDS, ETC., PROHIBITED ON ROADWAYS
6. No person shall ride upon or use any coaster, skateboard, sleigh, skis, skates, toy vehicles, or similar devices on a roadway.

IN-LINE SKATING
6.1 Notwithstanding the provisions of Section 6 hereof, the use of roller blades commonly referred to as in-line skates is permitted:

(a) On roadways designated by resolution of the Committee on Works and Operations of The City of Winnipeg as Bicycle Routes during the period when vehicular traffic is restricted to local access on said roadways; and,

(b) On roadways in City of Winnipeg parks, except where such use is expressly prohibited by traffic control device. added 5991/92 (entire subsection 6.1)

PROHIBITION OF SKATEBOARDS ON DESIGNATED SIDEWALKS 6.2 No person shall ride upon or use a skateboard on a sidewalk where there is placed a traffic control device prohibiting such use of the sidewalk. amended 7883/2001
